Lesson for campus stores: Service is key

OBERLIN, Ohio, Nov. 11, 2000 -- Poof, then they were gone. The online textbook retailers, some advertising huge discounts, scared bricks-and-mortar college book stores when they came online in 1998, but no more. They've all but vanished, overcome by customer service problems -- like book returns. At the National Association of College Stores, spokesperson Laura Nakoneczny said three's been a lesson: Successful textbook retailing is a service-heavy business best done by bricks-and-mortar stores, albeit with a display window on the web for aspects of customer service to which the web lends itself.

WSU study: Basketball team better after tai chi

    RESEARCH
    HYPOTHESIS

Tai Chi players will have less illness, will increase shooting percentages, assists and blocked shots and decrease turnovers, and as a result the team will win more games. The research was conducted during the 1999-2000 season and statistics were compared with 1998-1999.

WINONA, Minn., Nov. 10, 2000 -- A Winona State University study suggests that athletes can be healthier and more successful if they practice an ancient Chinese preventive medicine routine. For six months Winona State varsity basketball players practiced three times a week with tai-chi master Brice Wilkinson, a retired prof. Performance improved. Three-point shots increased five percent; free throws, four percent; field goals, two percent. Also, assists increased, turnovers decreased, and blocked shots almost doubled. The season record went from 15-12 to 19-9. The results appear in Tai Chi magazine in an article by Wilkinson, head coach Mike Leaf and assistant coach Tom Brown. The authors admit that it is difficult to directly compare the abilities of different players over the two-year span of the research and suggest further studies. Another result: Better health. Said Leaf: "In previous seasons we often had three or four guys down with various ailments or sickness that would prevent them from taking part in practice or games. This year we had no team flu or sickness."

Where will WSU put all the students?

WINONA, Minn., Nov. 10, 2000 -- Housing consultants have determined that an additional 600 beds will be needed at Winona State University over the next few years to meet projected enrollment -- in addition to the Sarnia Street dorm that opens in 2002. John Ferden, the university executive in charge of housing, said leading options include:

  • Adding rooms at Loretto Hall at the old College of St. Teresa.
  • Building another dorm from scratch if funding can be found.
  • Arranging with a private developer to build and lease a dorm to the university.

Westpfahl faults media, says mayor snubs him

WINONA, Minn., Nov. 10, 2000 -- The Winona newcomer who captured 25 percent of the votes for mayor, Mark Westpfahl, criticized the news media, including the CyberIndee, for not covering the election. The Daily News, he said, barely covered the race and the Post didn't carry any articles. Westpfhal, 21, whose strength was concentrated at Winona State and Saint Mary's universities, also criticized incumbent Mayor Jerry Miller, who won. "While talking with Mayor Miller I have been declined time to sit down and talk about city issues. I too am a citizen of Winona, and according to Mayor Miller, he takes everyone's opinions and concerns seriously. He has an open door mayoral policy. If so, why have I been denied access to him? He has also walked away from me on three separate occasions."

VitalBooks: One disk does it all

RALEIGH, N.C., Nov. 9, 2000 -- A single disk that contains all of a student's course materials for a semester, including textbooks, has been introduced in dental curriculums by Vital Source Technology. Ten major publishers, including Mosby, Saunders, McGraw-Hill and Wiley, have authorized their texts to be placed on VST's VitalBooks disks. The disks are rented to students under strict terms. VST founder Robert Watkins said studies have found that students want the speed that the VitalBooks DVD delivers. Also, he said, students don't have to keep switching disks because it's all in one.

  • Details: Single disk carries all of students' texts

WSU laptops have enemy: Coffee, cola

WINONA, Minn., Nov. 10, 2000 -- Since fall classes began, 11 Winona State University students have ruined their leased laptops by spilling coffee or cola, said Dean Feller, computer support chief. "Keep all liquids, even closed bottles, away from the machine," Feller said. If you do spill, immediately turn off the machine and bring it in, he said: "In some cases we have been able to repair the machine before further liquid damage sets in." If a leased laptop is beyond repair, insurance pays for a replacement after the student pays a $500 deductible, Feller said.

Injured WSU quarterback out of cast, may suit up

WINONA, Minn., Nov. 10, 2000 -- The injury-plagued Winona State University football team may finally have good news. Sophomore quarterback Bruce Carpenter may be back for the Mineral Water Bowl on Dec. 2. Carpenter broke his leg filling in for injured Jamie Kahler early in the season. This week a doctor removed the cast and took the screws out. Said Sawyer: "We hope he will be activated for the bowl game."

    WSU links with veterans cited

WINONA, Minn., Nov. 9, 2000 --Winona State has deep connections with military service to the country, the university's publication director, Dick Davis, said at the dedication of a veterans' memorial on campus. Davis, a former Marine, noted that the first president of the school, John Ogden, resigned to fight in the Civil War. Davis was among speakers when the memorial, a metal sculpture of an eagle, was dedicated in front of Howell Hall. Also speaking was former university Vice President Jack Kane, a retired Army Reservist, who said that soldiers have made the country what it is: "It is the soldier, not the journalist, who has given us freedom of the press."

WSU Republican leader bullish on Florida recount

WINONA, Minn., Nov. 9, 2000 -- The president of College Republicans at Winona State University, Brad Delger, expressed confidence that party standard-bearer George W. Bush will win the recount in Florida and the presidency of the republic. "We knew the election would be close, but not this close, Delger said. "No one expected it to be this close." Delger said he had been optimistic that Bush would carry Minnesota but not surprised that the state's electoral votes went instead to Democrat Al Gore. Minnesota has not voted Republican in a presidential race since 1972, he noted.

ST. PAUL, Minn., Nov. 9, 2000 -- The state college professors union is supporting a $500 a year increase in the child-care grants in the upcoming Legislature. Russ Stanton, the union's lobbyist, said that surveys have found that college students spend far more than the current $2,000 maximum for child care. WINONA, Minn., Nov. 9, 2000 -- The manager at Brothers bar downtown, Kelly Kaebisch, warned employees that police will be sending an underage customer into the bar to test whether IDs are being checked. Kaebisch said everyone in the bar business is especially alert to fake IDs after the raid that netted 48 arrests two weeks ago at Chuckers. Kaebisch said he's stressed the importance of thorough ID checks to employees.

  • WSU prof: Don't expect Electoral College surprise

WINONA, Minn., Nov. 10, 2000 -- A Winona State University political scientist, Fred Lee, doubts the speculation that some electors will change their allegiance when the Electoral College meets in December to choose the next president. Lee said that electors have been faithful throughout history. Since the Electoral College system was put in place by the Constitution in 1789, there have been approximately 35,000 electors and only seven have gone against the majority vote of their states or districts, Lee said. Speculation about electors changing sides this time has arisen with the apparent popular vote victory of Al Gore and possible electoral vote victory of George W. Bush.

That's the word that's spread rapidly among bar owners. Said the bar manager who claimed to have gotten the inside word: "I think it's entrapment, but the cops told me what the guy looks like, so I'm not too worried." So what's the decoy look like? Rieder vs. Gutknecht in 2002? Maybe

EYOTA, Minn., Nov. 9, 2000 -- After losing twice for Congress, Mary Rieder isn't necessarily giving up. The Winona State University econ prof said she may challenge Republican Gil Gutknecht again in 2002 if he seeks a fourth term. "It really depends on if Gil changes," Rieder said, adding: "But I am not going to go through this again if I'm just going to lose." • WSU Democrat: Revote needed in Florida county

WINONA, Minn., Nov. 9, 2000 -- A co-chair of the Winona State University College Democrats club, Karla Bigham, sees a revote coming in Florida to settle the presidential election. A federal judge in the Palm Beach ballot confusion should settle the issue by ordering a revote, Bigham said. Suits have been filed over the ballot. Some voters say they were confused by the ballot format and punched a hole for Pat Buchanan instead of Al Gore. Meanwhile, a statewide recount is underway to determine whether Florida's 25 electoral votes go to Gore or George W. Bush. Both candidates need Florida to win.

Laptop screens susceptible to cold damage

WINONA, Minn., Nov. 9, 2000 -- With winter setting in, Winona State University students were warned against leaving laptop computers in their cars. Prolonged exposure to the cold winter temps can crack or fracture screens, said Dean Feller at the campus computer repair shop. "Aside from the entire machine, the screen is the most expensive to replace," Feller said. Even with insurance, students can expect to pay $500 to replace a damaged screen, he said. Feller's advice: Bring your laptop inside instead of leaving it in your car between classes and overnight.

No ease of tension for Kierlin campaign co-chief

WINONA, Minn., Nov. 10, 2000 -- For Republican stalwart Terry Litvan, who was co-manager of Bob Kierlin's State Senate campaign, there's been little relief from the anxiety leading up to the election. On election night, there were Winona County counting delays. Not until 2:05 a.m. did Litvan get unofficial numbers that Kierlin had won. Official word didn't come until 5:30 p.m. Then there was the unsettled question about the presidency: "Even though I'm sure we won I don't feel like I can relax yet." About the Kierlin victory, Litvan congratulated his challenger: "The numbers show that our opponent, Judy Gilow, fought a good campaign." On Wednesday Litvan did get some relief. She spent the day taking down campaign signs.
