Bar bouncer: Good ID checks possible
|
WINONA, Minn., Jan. 18, 2001 -- A former bar bouncer, Ethan Weibye, said lax door security should be blamed for under-age boozing that led to Chuckers losing its liquor license last month. Weibye said he intercepted underage people with dubious IDs in his job at another bar. "We always said, 'Go to Chuckers. They'll let you in there.'" Weibye made his comments in a letter to the Daily News editorial page. He disagreed with columnist Jim Galewski, who earlier said blame should be focused on underage patrons, not the bars. Said Weibye: "What it really comes down to is the bouncing staff, they're the ones at the door, they're the enablers, and they say who comes in and who doesn't. If they are trained to study an identification, and, if necessary, use a book to check any questionable areas, then they will be able to tell the difference between a valid and a false identification. I know for a fact that identifications like the Minnesota black border identification were taken all the time. At the establishment I bounced at we wouldn't even accept them unless they were accompanied with papers less than two months old.
