New Maxwell gym heavily used

WINONA, Minn, May 10, 2001 -- Student use of the new Maxwell fitness center at Winona State University exceeded expections, said Director Jeff Rienhardy. On a typical day 650 students swamp the third-floor facility. Reinhardy's headcount found these the busiest weekday hours from Jan. 13 to April 17:

  • 3 to 4 p.m.: An average of 72 students.
  • 4 to 5 p.m.: An average of 62.
  • 6 to 7 a.m.: An average of 61.
The busiest times for when varsity athletes use the facility. Football coach Tom Sawyer rotates 22 team members every day from 2 to 4. "I have my players on a workout rotation so they don't take away all the equipment from other students wishing to work out," Sawyer said. In addition to Maxwell, older workout facilities in the dorms and Memorial gym are still used. "Some students like to work out by themselves or with as little amount of people around," Reinhardy said. "That's why it's important to keep all the other workout facilities around." For the Maxwell facility he recommends slack periods:
  • 7 to 11 a.m.: An average of 12 students.
  • 6 to 10 p.m.: An average of 31.

    Profs' lobbyist: Transfer issue overblown

ST. PAUL, Minn., May 10, 2001 -- Some legislators have been overly swayed by horror stories from community college students who claim their credits aren't recognized when they transfer into state universities, the chief state faculty lobbyist says. "I have personally tracked down some of these stories and there is usually 'another side' to the story," said Russ Stanton. "Unfortunately, there is very little systematic collection of data on credit transfer, so all that legislators usually hear are wild anecdotes from aggrieved students and a few technical college administrators.: Stanton said the Higher Education Services agency has data that the state universities accept more transfer students from two-year institutions each year than the University of Minnesota and all the private colleges combined. Also, for the last two years for which data are available, transfers between two-year colleges and state universities were up over 17 percent, he said. "What legislators need to realize is that almost all credits already transfer," he said. The statewide faculty union, which Stanton represents, supports a web-based credit transfer manual to inform all students in advance of the transferability of each course.

Background: Will credit-transfers be budget issue?
