UTICA, Minn., Feb. 10, 2002 -- A school bus and a car collided, killing four people, three of them from the same family, near this western Winona County village on Sunday evening. The dead were the adults in the car. On the yellow school bus were children on an ice-skating trip to Saint Mary's University. Twelve of the passengers on the bus were hurt.

Poll: Ventura support evaporating

MINNEAPOLIS, Feb. 10, 2002 -- Deteriorating public enthusiasm for Gov, Jesse Ventura has dropped to the lowest point since he took office, a statewide tracking poll by the Star Tribune newspaper showed. Only 29 percent of the state believes the governor deserves a second term, the poll found. Ventura's support among young voters, especially college students, is believed to have slipped with his position on higher-ed and student aid funding. Last week on the "Prairie Home Companion" radio show, humorist Garrison Keillor mimicked the governor talking to a college crowd: "If you're smart enough to go to college, you should be smart enough to pay for it."

CARDUCCI

WSU ENGLISH

WINONA, Minn., Feb. 10, 2002 -- Over the years English prof Jane Carducci has had to change her attendance policy. When she first started at Winona State University, she excused an absence only if a student got a note from the dean. After a few years the dean, Bonnie Buzza, asked Carducci to change her policy, and she did. Still, Carducci has firm policies: Family vacations, weddings, and extreme tardiness are unexcused. Illness, funerals, family emergencies, and car accidents are all excused. Generally, Carducci said, she evaluates situations case-by-case. Keeping her informed is the key, she said. Carducci's policies differ from class to class. "In 100- and 200-level classes students can only miss two class periods unexcused," she said. "After that absences affect the student's grade" In these lower-division classes Carducci has seating charts but not for checking absences. She said the charts help her learn student names. "In 300- to 400-level classes, I understand students are adults and are paying for the classes, so I have no strict policy for these classes," she said. "I take attendance for my own benefit." Usually, she said, a student's grade reflects attendance. In 22 years of teaching, Carducci said, she has heard some lame excuses for being absent. While teaching in New York Carducci had a student who missed 10 class periods and at the end of the semester said she would get a note from her doctor. Indeed, the note from the doctor arrived. But the doctor happened to be the student's brother. The woman failed. In the case of a large number of students missing class due to a student death, such as the death of Winona State senior Nicole Zanoni in a late January car accident, Carducci said: "I would probably just cancel class depending on the number of students who will be absent."
