Police chief unfriendly to Wolf's Den planWINONA, Minn., March 29, 2002 -- Plans for a super-night club on Third Street, the Wolf's Den, were denied for good reason, said Police Chief Frank Pomeroy. The applicants for the Wolf's Den license have complained that the Council jiggered its agenda to delay reviewing their application after the moratorium cane up, but Pomeroy said the sequence of agenda items at at the Council meeting sense. "Why would we pass a moratorium the same night that we issue a new liquor license that would pour 100 to 200 more college students out on the streets during the weekends to wake even more residents up?" he said. Pomeroy opposed the Wolf's Den for other reasons tool He noted that its proposed address, 220 E. Third St., was next to a day care center. Also, he said, about 90 residents from the neighborhood signed a petition asking the council not to give the Wolf's Den owners a liquor license. He said that the liquor license applicants, Curt Jereczek and Dan Jonas, had two weeks to gather support but "did nothing to gain the community's support." said Pomeroy. "The Wolf's Den would have been a two- or three-floor bar and I am unsure if they are still planning on opening at all to serve wine and beer, which the moratorium allows," said Pomeroy.
