One in five WSU students see debt at $15,000-plus

Data are from 201 questionnaires distributed in campus buildings, except the dorms, on a single day. The questions dealt with credit usage, debt and college financing. "We were curious to find out just how WSU studentsŐ spending habits compared to the national average," said journalism student John Simon.

WINONA, Minn., April 30, 2002 -- Twenty-two percent of Winona State University students expect to leave college with more than $15,000 debt, according to a survey by advanced journalism students. Most debt is in college loans, but 50 percent of the respondents said they owe $100 to $1,000 on their credit cards. Although debt concerns students, there is good news from the survey, by students in prof Drake Hokanson. The survey indicates that Winona State students on average have racked up far less credit card debt than the $2,700 national average for college students. Also, 26 percent of the Winona State students surveyed expect to owe nothing when they are graduated. The data:

WSU and Maria Hall: Almost a done deal

WINONA, Minn., April 30, 2002 -- An agreement for Winona State University to lease Maria Hall at the old St. Teresa campus is firm, said John Ferden, the university's housing executive. Lawyers for the university and the Hiawatha Education Foundation, which owns Maria Hall, are reviewing what Ferden believes will be the final draft. "There's no question it's going to happen," he said. Maria will replace Loretto Hall for Winona State students at the St. Teresa campus and relieve pressure on adjoining Lourdes Hall, where Winona State also live. Ferden said Maria will house about 50 more students than Loretto.
