Messmann to coach SMU women's basketball

WINONA, Minn., May 31, 2002 -- A veteran coaching assistant, Dan Messmann, was named interim women's basketball coach at Saint Mary's University. Messmann has been assistant men's coach at Saint Mary's since 2000. He also held the post from 1992 to 1994 and a year before that at Winona State. He also has coached at Cotter High School in Winona. Saint Mary's had planned a national search for a successor to Kim Fierke, but the calendar was late. In appointing Messmann, the university's athletic director, Chris Kendall, praised his work in the men's basketball program: "We're looking for that same kind of energy and commitment as our head women's coach."
