Vice presidency created for Kruger

WINONA, Minn., August 15, 2003 -- Without an announcement, a new vice president's position has been created at Winona State University. Tess Kruger replaced "Director of Human Resources" with "Vice President of University Affairs" in her signature block over the summer. Kruger, a lawyer, has been a right hand to university President Darrell Krueger, but the new title fornally adds her to his cabinet. Krueger has four other vice presidents:
  • Steve Richardson, academics
  • Cal Winbush, student affairs and facilities
  • Jim Schmidt, public relations and fund-raising
  • Joe Whetstone, technology

  • University President Darrell Kreuger and newly named Vice President Tess Kruger are no relation. He's "ue." She' just "u." Kruger sometimes uses a hyphenated name: Tess Arrick-Kruger. Still, people new to Winona State get confused.

    Ex-WSU nurse-writer stirs chicken soup

WINONA, Minn., August 15, 2003 -- The retired health services director at Winona State University, Dixie Sokolik, wrote a section in the latest book in the Chicken Soup series. Sokolik offers an upbeat story about her grandparents' sacrifices to help her mother, one of 11 children, realize her dream of becoming a nurse. The story first appeared as a column in the Daily News in 1999. When Jack Canfield, who created the Chicken Soup series, came across the column, he decided to include it in "Chicken Soup for the Mother's Soul 2."

WINONA, Minn., Aug. 6, 2003 -- A 22-year-old woman who woke up to find the Kissing Bandit in her bed is faulting police for reduced charges against the assailant. The Daily News reported that the woman, who was not named in the story, said in an interview that the police explanation that the guy was too drunk to remember is hardly a reason to water down the charges. Also, the woman said the police failed to notify her when the man, John Yehambaram, 21, a Winona State University student, was released. Yehambaram faces charges in pre-dawn kissing incidents in three campus-area houses on July 28

    Newspaper sues for campus records

CAMBRIDGE, Mass., Aug. 4, 2003 -- The Harvard Crimson sued the univerity to open up campus police records that have been denied. Amit Paley, the editor, said the Crimson has repeatedly asked for incident reports but been told that Harvard, being a private university, doesn't have to comply with the same openness policies as public universities. Paley said, however, campus police have state-granted policing authority, carry weapons and make arrests. The Student Press Law Center supports the suit. So does the American Civil Liberties Union.

Twice a week during the school year, Winona State University issues incident summaries to media that request them. The CyberIndee posts the incidents promptly to keep campus people aware of security issues.
