SMU students seek lower speed limit

WINONA, Nov 28, 2004 -- A group of St. Mary's University students will stop drivers appoaching Highway 14 at the foot of Stockton Hill and ask for signatures for dropping the speed limit. Kelly Botto, one of the organizers, said the 45 mph limit on Highway 14 is too fast. They want 35. Students in neon green shirts will have petitions on clipboards for motorists to sign during morning commutes on Wednesday and Thursday. State highway engineers have proposed ineffective solution that don't address traffic growth and topographical features, Botto said. "MnDOT will not act to reduce the speed limit without public pressure."
