In an interview Mettille showed none of the short-term memory loss that followed the accident. She visits her campus office some days, although she said her return remains unofficial: "I'm not really back yet." Friends have reported Mettille making outstanding progress in her recovery, but she was heistant to discuss the accident and, in fact, granted an interview only on condition that the accident and her recovery off limits. Those subjects, she said, are not worthy of attention.

Mettille's coaching status is unclear. Although she sees herself as not officially returned, players see their coach as back, Mettille has traveled with the team to coach three weekend tournaments this spring. Mettille acknowledged in the interview that NCAA rules do not allow coaches to work with players during the off season, noting that she will retain coaching until mid-August. The recent weekend tournaments are played without reporting scores and are mainly used for pick-up games to keep player in touch with the game. The team traveled St. Cloud State, University of Minnesota-Duluth and ther Univedrity of Wisconsin-Parkside, where Metille said she progress within the team. "All the games went really well and we are proud of accomplishments," she said.

<a

WSU nurse: No mumps at WSU so far

WINONA, Minn., April 29, 2006 -- As a mumps outbreak spreads through the upper Midwest, Winona State Univerity has not had any cases. Nurse practitioner Shari Harman said the campus health staff is watching for cases. A small supply of vaccines is available if an epidemic breaks out, Harmon said. Local medical facilities are fully stocked with vaccines, said Harman. Harman noted, however, that the vaccine isn't always 100 percent effective. Harman, a nurse practitioner during the 1980s when there was also an outbreak, said she wants students to be on the lookout for symptoms -- a fever, headache, body ache, lack of energy, and a swelling bump on either sides of the face just below the ear and jaw line. There is nothing to do to avoid the mumps except to get the right amount of sleep, nutrients and vitamins to build the immune system, she said. A poor diet, smoking, stress and alcohol can lead hurt the immune system, which would make one more vulnerable to mumps, she said. Her advice to anyone showing symptoms mumps to try to stay away from people and to get seen immediately. Mumps is infectious four days before the outbreak and four days after treatments, she said.

SHARI
HARMAN
Watch for symptoms

Reporter: Ashley Schultz
